Muhyiddin walks a fine line

The International Trade and Industry Minister and three-term Umno vice-president speaks out on the state of affairs in Umno, Barisan Nasional and Government.
Wait and see: Muhyiddin has been Umno vice-president for three terms, but says he is quite amazed by proposals from advisers that he should consider going up the hierarchy ladder in Umno.

UMNO vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is the most talked-about personality in the party these days. Known for his amiable and “quiet elegance”, the 61-year-old International Trade and Industry Minister and Pagoh MP, who has held the party vice-presidency for three terms, could now be mulling a move up the party hierarchy.

Q: Tan Sri, last month, you called for all speculation on the Prime Minister’s position to stop, saying it could worry local and foreign investors. And then?.

A: I called for what?

Q: You called for talk on the Prime Minister’s position to cease. That people should not speculate because ?

A: Did I say that, when?

Q: You were quoted as such in the newspapers. It was sometime in early April. And then one week later, you called for the PM to step down. Are you standing by what you said?

A: I didn’t say that. You have to understand the Bahasa (Malaysia) language. (Smiles) There is a lot of difference when you translate Bahasa into English.

Q: Then you can set the record straight here.

A: I was talking about the state of politics vis-à-vis Umno. We got a lot of messages in the last elections – the shift of support from the Barisan, the rise of new Opposition strength. We did not expect to lose Selangor, (it is) like losing a goldmine.

So if taken in totality, I think it says a lot about the issue of leadership – how leaders manage the country; why there is this shift of support which could be permanent.

If it is not addressed, we (Umno, Barisan Nasional) could go into oblivion.

Q: Change or fade away, is that your message?

A: That’s a concern which I think is real. (Tun) Dr Mahathir (Mohamad) has cautioned about the danger that the Barisan Government is in. I cannot underestimate the thinking power of the former prime minister.

My view is that this Government should move forward, but in order to move forward, there is a need for very serious thinking by the leadership on the situation in the country.

My proposal is not for him (Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) to step down, it is for the PM to consider the succession plan. When the successor takes over, we can ensure that we will not continue to lose out to the Opposition.

As a Malay, I am concerned about the position of the Malays, not that they should be dominating but they should have a strong presence in running the country. Issues of trust and confidence, these are quite critical.

I have to speak out because I am very much a part of the party hierarchy. And I have received tremendous response from the grassroots who feel that I am saying something right.

Q: When you say you want a transition, does it mean that it should be announced now? Or can he (Abdullah) take his time?

A: I think leaders should understand. Incidentally, there is the party election this year. Whether this means a lot in contributing to what and when the decision has to be made, that I leave to the good judgment of the leaders concerned.

Q: But he (Abdullah) has stated that he will defend his presidency.

A: That is his prerogative and right to do so. It is in the (Umno) constitution, everybody has got the right.

Q: He is exercising his democratic right, then, to defend his presidency?

A: Yes. But there are people who want to contest against him. They, too, are exercising their democratic right. At the end of the day, it is the delegates who will decide.

If members think the time is right for change, then they will exercise their right. Like in the last general election, they wanted change and they got the change.

So now we leave it to the good judgment of the delegates whether the time is right for change. And I have spoken on many occasions, expressing certain areas of concern and interest that need to be addressed.

Whether the present leadership would be in a position to manage ? there is a big question mark. So, I leave it to the delegates to decide.

Q: Meaning you are against the 30% quota for anyone to contest the presidency?

A: Yes, I have expressed that because it is undemocratic. Some smart aleck came up with the idea that we should impose a certain quota system that you can only contest if you get a certain number of nominations.

Why do you need a certain quota imposed on them?

You have to cross the bar before you can exercise your right. That, for me, is undemocratic.

I actually put the matter to the then Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir.

I was asked to go around the country to seek the views on how we want to relook the constitution, to do away with money politics. This (quota) was one of the matters that they raised with me, to please tell the supreme council that they do not want this quota system.

The quota system actually promotes money politics. So, when I presented this (feedback) to Dr Mahathir, he just shook his hand and said: “Leave it at that”. Now, he is saying, remove it. Of course, now he is no longer the PM.

But I would like for Umno to go back to where it was before. Whoever wants to contest, can contest. One nomination, a proposer and a seconder, like in the (general) election, that’s it.

Saya Paling Tidak Banyak Cita-cita, Kata Muhyiddin

Kawan tak pasti pasal apa Tan Sri nampak macam senang hati saja walaupun tak lama lagi nak lalui satu lagi pusingan perebutan jawatan Naib Presiden Umno.

Muhyiddin pernah tergelincir satu penggal masa pemilihan tahun 1996.Dalam pemilihan tu Pak Lah menang balik jawatan Naib Presiden setelah tewas pada tahun 1993.

Ramai kawan-kawan yang kata kesian tengok Muhyiddin lepas tu kena duduk celah-celah perwakilan biasa masa Perhimpunan Agung Umno sehinggalah pemilihan musim lalu memang balik.

Semuanya duga no hal baginya untuk lepas.

Terbaru…Datuk Effendi Norwawi undur diri.

Tun Ghafar pun pernah jadi Menteri Pertanian. Hanyut.

Jangan lupa bekas Timbalan Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim pun pernah jadi Menteri Pertanian.Juga hanyut .

Ingat peristiwa pesawat MAS terhempas di Tanjong Kupang Johor.Salah seorang mangsanya ialah Datuk Ali Haji Ahmad.Waktu itu beliau ialah Menteri Pertanian.

Tokoh MIC Datuk S Subramanian pernah jadi Timbalan Menteri Pertanian satu ketika dulu.

Apapun nampak Muhyiddin steady saja.

Kawan: Pernah mandi bunga

Muhyiddin Yassin - memulakan langkah

Mampukah pentadbiran Pak Lah menggugurkan Najib?

Sekian Mat Shamir

Singapore Decision On Poultry Import Soon

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 (Bernama) -- Singapore's decision on re-importing poultry from Johor and Melaka will be known in a day or two, Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Tuesday.

He said Singapore was considering resuming the import of poultry from the two states as soon as possible based on its confidence that the products were safe.

"They know the safety measures taken and feel safe. Now they intend to import chickens and ducks from Johor and Melaka," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here.

Muhyiddin said Singapore had asked Malaysia to gazette the two areas as controlled areas so that no poultry from other states were brought into the two states for export to the republic.

The two states were picked because of their proximity to Singapore and their distance from Kelantan which had been hit by the bird flu, he said.

Muhyiddin also said that Malaysia, with cooperation from its northern neighbour, Thailand, would step up border controls to curb the smuggling of poultry to contain the spread of the disease.

"In Malaysia, the marine police and the General Operations Force have stepped up border controls to prevent smuggling," he said.

He said Thailand had also agreed to start an early warning system whereby the two countries would inform each other of any new bird flu cases so that preventive measures could be taken immediately.

On the situation in Kelantan, he said the people were advised not to take their livestock to other states to avoid spreading the disease, in keeping with the quarantine imposed on the state.

So far, 11,849 animals had been culled in the affected villages as a preventive measure.

Earlier, when replying to Baharum Mohamed (BN-Sekijang) in the Dewan Rakyat, Muhyiddin said 194 million live chickens worth RM1,187.38 million and 29 million live ducks worth RM384.97 million had been exported to Singapore since 2000.

Of this, 43.3 million live chickens and 5.5 million live ducks were exported in 2000, 44 million live chickens and 6.8 million live ducks in 2001, 45 million live chickens and 6.9 million live ducks in 2002.

Last year the figure was 43 million live chickens and 6.5 million live ducks while the total up to June this year was 18.8 million live chickens and 3 million live ducks.

Muhyiddin said breeders in Malaysia had sustained roughly RM70 million losses since the bird flu outbreak was detected in Tumpat, Kelantan, on Aug 18 this year.

Muhyiddin, 61, -- the No. 3 in UMNO -- has emerged as a critic of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. "I think the grassroots are boiling with utter dissatisfaction. If changes don't happen in UMNO, many adverse things will surface," he said in an interview published by the UMNO-controlled Mingguan Malaysia newspaper at the weekend. Incentive Mechanism To Help Farmers Under Study - Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- The Cabinet today asked the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry to do a comprehensive study on an incentive mechanism for farmers to help them reduce production costs.

Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said this followed his informing the Cabinet that agricultural production in the country needed to be raised.

"This is because the Prime Minister himself wants agriculture output raised. We (ministry) have tabled the programme needed including introducing an incentive system," he told reporters at the pre-launch of Mardi's Biobusiness Showcase 2008 here today.

The incentive system, he said would replace the subsidy system practised presently and was meant to help farmers control costs.

On financial aid for farmers who suffered losses as a result of last month's floods in the country, Muhyiddin said the National Disaster Relief Management Committee had agreed for it to be channeled through Bank Pertanian branches in the affected states.

"We urge the National Security Division to release the RM25 million approved quickly so that the money can be distributed to affected farmers and livestock breeders," he said, adding that the formula would be the same as was done after the Dec 2006 floods.

"This is not compensation but aid to help reduce their burdens. Godwilling, by this month or next they will be able to get the money," he said.
